Funded hours
Tax Free Childcare
Parents/carers can sign up to a government Tax Free childcare scheme. For every £8 a parent pays in childcare costs the government pays £2.
To find out more about the scheme please see Extended hours below.
Please note:
- You cannot make use of the Tax Free childcare scheme and a childcare voucher scheme (usually through your employer).
Funding for children aged three and over
Universal hours
All children aged 3 – 4 years will receive the universal 15 hours per week government funding the term after their 3rd Birthday. Children who attend for more than 15 hours each week will receive an invoice for all additional hours.
Parents/carers do not need to do anything to qualify for the universal hours. The setting will claim this on your behalf.
Extended hours
Some parents/carers may be eligible to receive extended 15 hours per week government funding for their child after their 3rd Birthday.
Parents/carers can check whether they could be eligible for a range of government childcare offers, including 30 hours, via Childcare Choices at: https://www.childcarechoices.gov.uk or the Childcare Calculator at: https://www.gov.uk/childcare-calculator.
The eligibility criteria for 30 hours and Tax-Free Childcare are broadly aligned. For a more detailed guide to the 30 hours eligibility criteria see: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/30-hours-free-childcare-eligibility.
Parents will be able to apply for both 30 hours and Tax-Free Childcare at the same time by entering their details once. HMRC will check parents’ eligibility for both schemes at the same time.
PLEASE NOTE:
- Tax Free Childcare and Extended hours can be used together if the parent is eligible. However, you cannot get Tax Free Childcare at the same time as claiming Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Universal Credit or childcare vouchers.
- You must check your eligibility for the Extended hours the term prior to your child receiving his/her funding.
- You must register and receive your extended hours eligibility code the term prior to your child receiving his/her funding.
